Maths

At The Grange School, we believe that Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connect subject that helps secondary pupils make sense of the world. From algebra and geometry to data and probability, our approach builds secure understanding alongside practical problem-solving skills. We aim to support parents with clear, consistent learning goals so that children can progress confidently through each stage of the curriculum.

Our lessons focus on developing mathematical reasoning, not just answers. Pupils learn to explain their thinking, spot patterns, and choose efficient methods. This strengthens fluency and helps them tackle new questions with greater independence. By connecting ideas across topics—such as using number skills to support algebraic thinking or applying geometry to real-life measurements—students see how Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connect discipline.

We encourage parents to reinforce learning at home in manageable ways, such as discussing everyday maths, practising key facts, and supporting homework with calm, structured routines. If your child is preparing for assessments, we also recommend focusing on understanding the question, checking working, and reviewing mistakes constructively. With the right support, every pupil can build confidence and achieve their potential in Mathematics at The Grange School.

Key Stage 3

Year 7

In Year 7 whilst covering the appropriate topics for each year group in number, algebra, geometry and measure and statistics, we aim for all pupils to build their confidence in the use of mathematical principles and to develop their mathematical thinking. We endeavour to help make the transition from primary to secondary school as smooth as possible. Learning will be a continuous process, building on knowledge gained during KS2. Within all topics the students will be studying, they will be developing ‘mathematical processing’ skills, which includes reasoning, analysis and evaluation. During the year there will also be opportunities for pupils to use ICT to aid their study of mathematics.

Year 8

In Year 8 pupils will meet new topics and build on previous work. Students will continue to develop their “mathematical processing” skills whilst covering the appropriate topics for the year group in number, algebra, geometry and measure and statistics. There will be opportunities for pupils to use ICT to aid their study of mathematics.

Year 9

Students start their 3 year GCSE course. This is to prepare them for the wide breadth of topics and the deeper understanding needed for the GCSE.

Key Stage 4 - Options Information

Exam Board and SpecificationGCSE Maths

In Key Stage four, students continue working towards their mathematics GCSE at a tier appropriate to them. As in Key Stage 3 they study topics in Number, Algebra, Statistics, Handling Data and Shape, Space & Measure, with a strong focus on problem solving. The students are regularly tested throughout the course to pick up any misconceptions that may occur and intervention is put in place.

At the end of year 11, students will sit Edexcel GCSE mathematics. Students will sit 3 examination papers, one non-calculator and two calculator.

We also offer Further Maths GCSE to students aiming for grade 7+ in Maths. This optional course allows students to develop their mathematical understanding and will assist students to get the higher GCSE grades. It will also help at an introduction for those considering A-Level Maths.
