Ethos, Values & Mission

There is something special about The Grange School. It is found in the relationships we build, the way we support one another and the high expectations we have for every member of our community.

We believe that schools are strongest when people work together. Students, staff, families and the wider community all have an important part to play in creating a school where everyone can feel that they belong, can be proud of who they are and can achieve their potential.

We want our students to leave The Grange School with strong academic foundations, a sense of purpose and the character to make a positive contribution to the world around them.

Our Ethos

Our ethos is built around belonging, ambition, inclusion and community.

We know that students are more likely to thrive when they feel known, valued and supported. We therefore place great importance on positive relationships and on creating an environment where every student can feel a genuine sense of belonging.

We have high expectations of all our students. We encourage them to take pride in themselves, their learning and their school, to aim high and to understand that success comes through effort, resilience and learning from setbacks.

We believe that everyone has a contribution to make. We work together as a community, celebrating one another's successes, supporting those who need it and encouraging our students to look beyond themselves and consider the difference they can make to others.

This is reflected in the way we work together every day, in our classrooms, through our pastoral support, in our houses, through enrichment and leadership opportunities, and through our commitment to service and the wider community.

Our Values and Virtues

At The Grange School, we believe there is an important difference between values and virtues.

Our values describe what we believe is important and the expectations we share as a community. Our virtues describe the qualities we want to develop in our students so that they can live out those values and make positive choices for themselves and others.

At The Grange School we explicitly teach students the importance of our values.

Our shared values – DNA

Our DNA provides a shared language of expectations between The Grange School and Twynham School. It helps us to describe the behaviours and attitudes we expect from everyone in our school communities.

Our GRANGE virtues

Our GRANGE virtues provide the framework for our character development. They give students a shared language for the qualities we want them to recognise, practise and develop throughout their time at The Grange School.

We want our students to understand that character is developed through practice. Our GRANGE virtues therefore come to life through the experiences students have as members of our school community, through their relationships, choices, responsibilities, enrichment, houses, leadership and service.

Being a GRANGER means putting these virtues into practice. We want every student to see themselves as a GRANGER and to understand that our virtues are not simply words on a page, but qualities we live through our everyday actions. Whether in the classroom, in our houses, through enrichment, in our relationships with others or in the wider community, we are GRANGERS when we demonstrate Gratitude, Resilience, Ambition, Neighbourliness, Generosity and Empathy.

Strong character grows through every virtue.

Mission

Our mission is simple:

To unlock the potential of every student by providing an ambitious education, developing character and creating a strong sense of belonging.

We do this by putting our beliefs into practice every day.

Putting people first

We build strong, respectful relationships in which every student is known, valued and supported. We recognise individual strengths, needs and aspirations and work together to remove barriers to success.

Providing an ambitious education

We provide a consistent, high-quality curriculum that is accessible and ambitious for every learner.

We want every student to develop the knowledge, skills and qualifications they need to open doors to their future, regardless of their starting point.

Maintaining high expectations

We believe that high expectations, strong routines and positive attitudes create the conditions in which students can thrive.

We expect students to take pride in their learning, their conduct and their contribution to school life, while recognising that mistakes and setbacks are opportunities to learn and grow.

Developing character

Academic success matters, but education is about more than grades.

Through our GRANGERS virtues, we deliberately develop the qualities young people need to navigate challenges, build positive relationships, make good choices and contribute to the lives of others.

Building belonging

We want every student to feel that they are an important part of The Grange School community.

Our houses, enrichment, leadership, service and wider school experiences give students opportunities to connect with others, discover their strengths, contribute to school life and take pride in belonging.

Opening doors

We have high aspirations for every student.

Through excellent teaching, strong pastoral support, careers education and expert guidance, we help students to understand their strengths, make informed choices and aim high for their future.

We want every student to leave The Grange School with the knowledge, qualifications, character and confidence to make positive choices and take their next steps successfully.

What We Believe

Ultimately, we believe that every student matters and every student can achieve more than they may initially believe possible.

When students feel known, valued and proud to belong, they are more likely to engage, participate and succeed.

Pride builds belonging. Belonging drives success.

When students feel proud, they show up, step up and succeed. For our most disadvantaged students, this can change everything.

Our Trust

Twynham Learning exists to be a powerful movement for social equality and provide world-class opportunities irrespective of background. We are a charitable Trust which brings together and supports a family of schools on the Dorset coast.
